Animal Safety
Debbie understands the importance of pets in our daily lives and how significant their roles are in our mental and physical health. Some of Debbie's work includes:
Pet Resources Center Committee
Debbie sits on the pet Resource Committee, which meets monthly to discuss updates and recommendations given on the proposed Pet Resource Center. Recommendations received from the community include providing a healthy & functional environment for animals/staff/volunteers/visitors, addressing the root causes of animal homelessness & lack of access to resources, creating a state-of-the-art social services campus serving people/pets in need, which could serve as a model for other communities around the country, and developing public-private partnerships for the resource center operation.
San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter Agreement
Debbie proposed and successfully passed two initiatives related to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS). The first was an agreement with the City of San Marcos, City of Kyle, City of Buda, and Hays County for the management and operation of SMRAS. This agreement aimed to define responsibilities and collaboration efforts to care for abandonded animals, reduce overpopulation, and provide community education. The second initiative involved an agreement with SMRAS to continue providing animal shelter services for Hays County. The resolution pushed for a 2-year plan to achieve no-kill status aligning with the City of San Marcos' 5-year plan. the agreement also included provisions for animal hoarding cases, with Hays County sharing expenses with San Marcos on a case-by-case basis.
Austin Pets Alive!
Debbie successfully sponsored an agreement for Hays County to work with Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) as the Project Coordinator for the new Pet Resource Center (PRC). APA! will assist in planning, researching locations, and providing recommendations for the PRC's development, budget, and operations. The partnership aims to create a centrally located and accessible PRC, with APA! overseeing major programs such as Safety Net, Pet Retention Assistance, Lost Pet Reunification, and Adoption & Holding.
